East Wangaratta Nature Conservation Reserve
National Parks and Reserves
Located just two kilometres from Wangaratta's city centre, the East Wangaratta Nature Conservation Reserve protects a valuable remnant of River Red Gum bushland, offering a quiet and natural escape close to town.
Accessed via a discreet entrance along the Great Alpine Road, the reserve is clearly marked by Parks Victoria signage. Entry is on foot only via a rough vehicle track, as the gate is locked to prevent vehicle access and manage licensed cattle grazing within the area.
The reserve is bordered to the west by Yellow Creek, an anabranch of the Ovens River, which meets Reedy Creek nearby. This combination of waterways and native vegetation creates a rich habitat for local wildlife.
Visitors will find a well-developed shrub layer dominated by River Bottlebrush, along with a grassy understorey that supports a variety of bush birds. The reserve is best suited to low-impact activities such as nature study and birdwatching, providing a peaceful setting for observing native flora and fauna.
As a conservation area, visitors are encouraged to tread lightly, respect the environment and help preserve this important natural habitat.
