Cooloola Recreation Area in Great Sandy National Park is shaped by wind and water. Cooloola's landscape features sweeping beaches, coloured sand cliffs, forests, heathlands and paperbark swamps. Water is everywhere, from surf beaches and freshwater lakes to the quietly pristine upper reaches of the Noosa River.
Explore the area's walking tracks, including the historic Double Island Point Lighthouse, or pack a tent for the two to four-day Cooloola Wilderness Trail. Paddle the Upper Noosa River or discover the region by four-wheel drive with beach access at Rainbow Beach or Tewantin (near Noosa). A high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle is required for beach driving and inland sand tracks.
Stay a night or two at one of Cooloola's many camping areas, ranging from campgrounds with facilities to remote walkers' camps surrounded by nature. Visitor information centres at Tewantin and Rainbow Beach can help you plan your visit.
Camping permits are required for all camping areas. Vehicle Access Permits (VAPs) are required for beach driving and some inland tracks. Campers in the Teewah Beach camping zones must bring and use a portable toilet, even for a one-night stay.
