10 handy tips for your first caravanning adventure

Caravan holidays offer unrivalled freedom to explore Australia at your own pace, but if you're new to caravanning, the learning curve can feel a little steep. From choosing the right van to confidently reversing into your site, a bit of preparation and know-how goes a long way.

1. Get the fundamentals right first

When shopping for a caravan, it can be tempting to focus on optional upgrades and flashy features. Michael says many first-time buyers make the mistake of overcomplicating things.

'One of the most common mistakes we see is people overbuying. Things like slide-out kitchens can sound great at the time, but often end up barely used.'

Instead, focus on choosing the right layout, suitable suspension and enough power for the way you'll travel.

'Get the fundamentals right, but future-proof where it makes sense. That will make a bigger difference than most add-ons.'

2. Pack smarter, not heavier

Most caravanners carry more than they need when starting out.

Michael has a simple solution: 'Put a sticker on everything you pack, then peel it off once you've actually used it. If something still has a sticker on it after a few trips, or after six months, take it out of the van. Chances are you don't need it.'

Along with your holiday essentials, make sure you have a first aid kit, basic tool kit, wheel chocks, levelling ramps, hoses and power leads on board. And don't forget the fun stuff.

'Pack a camera and a good sense of humour. You'll use both.'

3. Create a pre-departure routine and stick to it

A consistent pre-departure check can prevent costly mistakes and improve safety on the road.

Before leaving, check your coupling, safety chains, breakaway cable, electrical connections, tyres, lights and brakes. Then complete a walk-around to ensure hatches, windows, awnings and doors are properly secured.

'A good tip is to leave the checklist on the steering wheel, so you can't drive off without going through it first.'

Most importantly, take your time.

'Never rush your departure. A five-minute walk-around before every trip can prevent costly damage and make a real difference to safety on the road.'

4. Plan shorter driving days

Towing a caravan is very different from everyday driving.

'One of the biggest mistakes people make is thinking they'll cover the same distance towing a caravan as they would in a normal car. You won't,' says Michael.

'Towing takes more concentration, you need more room to brake, you'll use more fuel, and you'll stop more often.'

Build extra time into your schedule, take regular breaks and try to arrive before dark.

'Caravanning isn't about getting there as fast as possible. Plan shorter days, leave some flexibility, and underestimate how far you think you'll comfortably travel.'

5. Be prepared for confined spaces

The right caravan isn't necessarily the biggest one.

'Think about how you'll actually use the van: how many people are travelling, how long you'll be away for, whether you'll mostly stay in caravan parks, and whether you want to head further off-grid.'

Before buying, consider the parks you're likely to visit and whether site sizes, turning areas and drive-through sites suit your setup.

'Focus on layout and configuration, not just length. Ultimately, the best van is the one you feel confident towing and comfortable living in.'

6. Build confidence behind the wheel slowly

If towing feels intimidating, you're not alone.

'The biggest thing is to slow everything down and give yourself permission to be new at it,' says Michael.

Spend time practising turning, braking and reversing before heading off on a major trip. A towing course can also be a worthwhile investment.

'Towing is a skill you build with practice. You don't need to have it mastered on day one.'

And don't let impatient drivers pressure you.

'Travel at a pace you're comfortable with, and remember that every experienced caravanner started where you are now.'

7. Have a reversing routine

Reversing into a site becomes much easier when everyone understands their role.

Before manoeuvring, walk the site and identify any hazards such as poles, taps, trees and uneven ground. Then choose one person to guide the driver.

'Whether that's your husband, wife, partner, travelling kids or best mate, pick one person and only listen to them. Too many voices can make things confusing very quickly.'

Clear communication and patience are worth far more than trying to reverse perfectly on the first attempt.

8. Practise before your first big trip

One of Michael's strongest recommendations is to complete a trial run before your first major holiday.

'Your first trip doesn't need to be big. In fact, it's better if it isn't.'

'One person might handle levelling and unhitching while the other connects services or gets the inside sorted.'

10. Learn from others, but travel your own way

The caravanning community is full of helpful advice, but Michael says it's important not to feel obliged to follow every opinion you hear.

'What works perfectly for one couple or family might not suit your van, your tow vehicle, your budget or the way you like to travel.'

Seek expert guidance on important safety topics such as weights, towing capacities and tyres, but don't be afraid to develop your own routines over time.

'Don't take every opinion as gospel. Use the community to learn and connect, but remember it's your trip, your van and your way of travelling.'
