If you’re itching for a road trip that’s equal parts rainforest magic, beach bliss, and laid-back town charm, the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales should be the absolute top of your list. I’m Shania Molloy from Roady, the crew behind the growing travel app, and I recently hit the road to explore this slice of paradise, staying at some epic BIG4 Holiday Parks along the way. Here are my personal picks of the best spots, swims, and surprises from the trip.

Nature keeps you guessing

The Northern Rivers is one of those places where the scenery changes faster than your playlist. One minute you’re wandering through lush green rainforest, the next you’re floating in turquoise ocean waves. It’s got that rare mix of wild beauty and chill vibes that genuinely makes every stop feel like a new adventure.

BIG4 parks that go above and beyond

I stayed at a bunch of BIG4 Holiday Parks during the trip, and each one had its own standout features:

  • BIG4 Saltwater Yamba Holiday Park: This place felt more like a nature retreat than a holiday park. The lazy river was a dream, and the outdoor movie setup at sunset? Pure magic. Plus, the adults-only pool area was a peaceful and unexpected bonus.
  • BIG4 Sawtell Beach Holiday Park: Beach access straight from the park – need I say more? It was unreal waking up and strolling down to the sand in seconds.
  • BIG4 Tasman Holiday Parks – Ballina: Right on the river, with spacious rooms and a deck perfect for BBQs. It was the ideal spot to kick back after a day of exploring.
  • BIG4 Tweed Billabong Holiday Park: This one’s a hidden gem. The private billabong was hands down the best feature – perfect for paddleboarding or a refreshing swim. The tropical water park was a hit, too.

Swimming spots that steal the show

If you’re chasing the ultimate swim, Angourie Green Pool near Angourie Point Beach is a must. It’s got cliff jumps, ocean views, and that kind of natural beauty that makes you forget your phone exists. I also loved the Currumbin Valley Rock Pools – a peaceful picnic spot surrounded by waterfalls and rock pools. You’re seriously spoiled for choice when it comes to places to cool off.

Beyond the beach

Sure, the beaches are stunning, but there’s plenty more to do. I went horse riding with Zephyr Horses in Byron Bay – riding through the bush and onto the beach was unforgettable. There were also rainforest hikes that led to secret swimming holes, and plenty of spots that felt like they were made just for road trippers.

One of the best surprises? Just how many swimming spots there are. Rivers, waterfalls, ocean pools – it’s like nature’s waterpark. And the towns dotted along the way are full of charm and friendly locals.

Towns with personality

Sawtell was a standout for me. It’s got a laid-back vibe, trendy cafes, and boutique shops that make it feel a bit different from your average coastal town. Byron Bay, of course, is always a good time – friendly locals, creative energy, and plenty of quirky spots to explore.

Road trip tips from the Roady crew

Planning this trip was easy thanks to the Roady app – it’s packed with pins for hikes, waterfalls, beaches, and hidden gems. But beyond the tech, here are a few hacks I swear by:

  • Stop in small towns for snacks – the pies from Bruns' Bakery in Brunswick Heads were next-level
  • Make a killer playlist to keep the vibes high
  • Don’t rush – the short drives between spots mean you can take your time and soak it all in.

Final thoughts from the road

If I had to sum up the Northern Rivers in three words? Lush, laid-back, and surprising. It’s the kind of place that road trip dreams are made of – short drives, scenic routes, and endless places to explore. Whether you’re chasing waterfalls, beach days, or just a good time, this region delivers.
