Established in 1860, the 25-hectare gardens are a noted example of a regional public garden created in colonial Victoria.

They are home to an impressive collection of heritage-listed native and exotic trees, including the English Oak planted in 1863 to commemorate the marriage of the Prince and Princess of Wales which was named the 2021 Victorian Tree of the Year by the National Trust.
There is also a beautiful ornamental lake, perfect for bird watching, walking and cycling tracks, an award-winning playground and a spacious, covered barbecue and picnic area.
