Tasman Peninsula & The South East Highlights

If departing from Hobart, Eaglehawk Neck acts as a natural gateway to the many gems that are to be found within the Tasman Peninsula. Doubling as a small town, it is centred on a narrow strip that links the Tasman Peninsula and the Forestier Peninsula and is an area rich in convict history.

Some of the most spectacular and unique natural formations are another highlight of the region, much of it within Tasman National Park. Key features include the Blowhole, which has a great viewing area to witness this natural wonder; Devils Kitchen, an imposing rock face; and Tasman’s Arch, which is all that remains of a huge sea cave.

The Tessellated Pavement is an intriguing find. This rare feature resembles a cracked tiled floor and makes a brilliant photo subject.

At the bottom of the park are sky-piercing sea cliffs, some reaching a height of 300m. These are the highest in the southern hemisphere.

There is a wide assortment of walking tracks within Tasman National Park that showcases this wonderful scenery. Or take a boat cruise and gain front-row views of the amazing formations, travel into sea caves, spot wildlife, and much more.

Yet when it comes to leading attractions within Tasman Peninsula & the South East region, Port Arthur Historic Site grabs the most attention. This well-preserved area is part of the World Heritage-listed Australian Convict Sites and allows for a gripping insight into early convict life.

Take an introductory tour to learn about Port Arthur’s fascinating past before checking out a vast selection of buildings, led by the much-photographed penitentiary.
