Capricorn Highlights
Choose from a vast assortment of astounding sights and experiences in the Capricorn region.
It pays to embrace water. The Capricorn region is within easy reach of the world-renowned Great Barrier Reef as well as the 18 islands that form the Keppel Group – led by Great Keppel Island. Magnificent white-sand beaches dominate the Capricorn coast and the popular town of Yeppoon is an ideal base. Naturally, water-based recreation is boundless.
Carnarvon Gorge is eye catching. It is found within Carnarvon National Park, which is also home to the towering Boolimba Bluff. The gorges and waterfalls of Blackdown Tableland National Park are other attractive natural features.
A tour of the Capricorn Caves will enchant. These ancient above-ground caves are easily accessed from Rockhampton.
A visit to the Central Queensland Sapphire Gemfields is essential. This area is home to – surprise, surprise – rich deposits of gems and you can try fossicking, or head underground on a mine tour. Gem shops and galleries are scattered throughout the area, which incorporates key spots like Sapphire, Rubyvale, and Anakie.
Rockhampton has strong appeal. Stroll through the tranquil Rockhampton Botanic Gardens or within nearby Mt Archer National Park, which gifts wonderful city views. If you like steak then you’ve lucked in – Rockhampton is Australia’s ‘Beef Capital’. History is a prominent theme: view striking old buildings and then step back in time at the Rockhampton Heritage Village.
There’s more history to absorb at nearby Mount Morgan. An incredible amount of gold was yielded from this former mining town and a tour of the mine site brilliantly recaptures these glittering days.
