Leliyn (Edith Falls)
Nature & Parks
Just an hour from Katherine, Edith Falls (Leliyn) is a stunning series of waterfalls and natural pools in Nitmiluk National Park. Enjoy an easy swim at the lower pool, hike the Leliyn Trail to the Upper Pools, or tackle the Sweetwater Pool walk for a more secluded dip. It’s the perfect spot to cool off and soak up the beauty of the Top End.
Just an hour’s drive north of Katherine, Edith Falls (known to the Jawoyn people as Leliyn) is a must-see stop on your Top End adventure. Surrounded by rugged escarpment country and lush paperbark trees, this series of cascading waterfalls and natural swimming holes is as beautiful as it is refreshing.
The main pool, just a short 150-metre stroll from the carpark, is a favourite for families looking for an easy swim at the base of the falls. For something a little more adventurous, the Leliyn Trail takes you on a 2.6 km loop walk up to the Upper Pools, where smaller, crystal-clear rock holes are perfect for a dip with a view. If you are wanting a challenge start this walk via the kiosk and lower pool before you head up and up on a steep, rocky climb. If you are looking for an easier climb take the car park route, whilst still mostly uphill, there are less rocks to navigate and once you hit the top you will be rewarded with a special glimpse of the falls through the trees.
If you’re keen to stretch your legs further, the Sweetwater Pool Walk (8.6 km return) rewards hikers with a secluded swimming spot along the Edith River, a quiet oasis away from the crowds. For the truly adventurous, Edith Falls marks the starting point of the famous Jatbula Trail, a 62 km multi-day hike through some of Nitmiluk National Park’s most stunning landscapes.
Whether you’re after a quick swim or a full-day hike, Edith Falls is the perfect blend of natural beauty and outback adventure and an unforgettable way to experience the Top End.
