Central NSW Highlights
A plethora of sublime attractions, activities, and experiences features throughout the Central NSW region.
Impressive natural and outdoor experiences are overflowing in these parts. Warrumbungle National Park, near Coonabarabran, incorporates the bewitching Breadknife formation. The Abercrombie Caves, south of Bathurst, are equally spellbinding.
Orange is dotted with glorious parks and gardens, and a climb to Mount Canobolas’ summit is rewarding. Taronga Western Plains Zoo at Dubbo is world class – view hundreds of animals in open-range surrounds.
Bathurst is famous for the Bathurst 1000 car race each October. But for much of the year you can take a (slow) drive around the Mount Panorama Motor Racing Circuit. Visit the National Motor Racing Museum while you are there.
Superb historical attractions emerge within the Central NSW region. Be gripped by stories revealed within Old Dubbo Gaol, retrace the steps of bushranger Ben Hall in Forbes, or be moved when uncovering Cowra’s prisoner of war camp history.
Relive the gold rush at Bathurst’s History Hill Museum, marvel at the Australian Museum Diprotodon Exhibition in Coonabarabran, and visit the Henry Parkes Centre in Parkes, which is crammed with three museums as well as an Elvis Presley exhibit. In addition, local history museums are scattered throughout Central NSW.
Art thrives in Central NSW and first-rate regional galleries are found in the likes of Bathurst, Cowra, and Orange. The Western Plains Cultural Centre in Dubbo houses both a regional gallery and museum and Forbes Platypus Gallery has superb pieces to purchase.
Other leading attractions include the Cowra Japanese Garden and Cultural Centre and the Mudgee Observatory, which affords superb viewing opportunities of the night sky.
Central NSW food and wine will whip the tastebuds into a frenzy. Cowra, Mudgee, and Orange all excel when it comes to wine and cellar doors are prominent. These wine regions back this up by delivering equally enticing food. Orange goes all out to showcase its palate-pleasing produce, hosting a handful of annual food-related events.
